echo inparting

Echo in Parting, 2022 is a Super 8 film inspired by the Greek myth of Narcissus and Echo.

In this myth, the wood nymph Echo is unable to speak for herself and is cursed to repeat the words of others. One day she falls in love with the handsome figure of Narcissus and follows him around the woods. Though incapable of loving anyone but himself, he cruelly rejects Echo.

Her body then fades away while pining for him. Her bones becoming rocks on the forest floor and her voice remaining to be heard in mountain valleys and caves.

By performing to the character of Echo, I seek to bring to focus the silenced voices of women’s storytelling throughout culture

Using my own body as subject matter, I direct a lover’s voyeuristic gaze upon me with film. A collaboration of trust where we aimed to meet each other’s gaze in creating a naturalistic vision of myself.

Through this collaborative process, I explored the narrative of my body holding a shadow of those who have both loved and abused me. The final edited video reconciling my authority as an artist to be the holder of my own image and narrative.

Installation from Majilis Travelling Scholarship 2022 Exhibition at Fiona and Sydney Myer Gallery.
